Many of the forecast models are predicting Hurricane Matthew to be off the North Carolina coast this weekend, possibly bringing heavy rains, high winds and lightning. Hurricane Matthew is currently a Category 3 with 120 mph winds.

How Should Your Business Prepare?

Power outages make up the majority of network outages businesses face. Minimize the risk by preparing for such disasters. Start by making sure your equipment is connected to a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). When the power goes out, a UPS will allow you time to do a graceful shutdown of equipment. Adequate UPS systems, as well as proper grounding of sensitive equipment, are crucial. Audits will help determine if facilities can meet power demands and ward off problems.

If a storm sneaks up on you and you do not have proper grounding or power protection, consider powering your system before the disaster impacts your equipment. Power surges can pose the greatest threat to your system.

You also want to be sure to properly back up all data before a large storm. Ideally, you'll want off-site data backup. If that's not possible, after backing up your data, remove the backup device from the area of threat so that it is not damaged with the primary equipment.

Lightning is your worst enemy. Protect yourself from lightning with proper grounding of your equipment and building. The National Lightning Safety Institute warns, “Ordinary fuses and circuit breakers are not capable of dealing with lightning-induced transients.”

Don’t depend on local team members who may be facing their own challenges in the storm. An emergency auto attendant may provide an easy solution to small businesses that are required to temporarily shut down due to a storm.
