Just how important is structured cabling to your business? Let's just say it's the vital pipeline on which your company depends to execute all its voice and data transactions. The telecommunications infrastructure through which your telephone, video, and data transmissions flow, structured cabling connects your network to your service provider's portal. This point is also known as the point of demarcation or the network interface device (NID).

To put it in more concrete terms, when you entered into an agreement with your service provider, they took on the responsibility of furnishing you with a specified number of lines. They carry out their end of the bargain by connecting the service lines as far as the point of demarcation. It is your responsibility to provide a structured cabling system that will bring it into your office.

Building a structured cabling system is a unique task and it is safe to say that since each design depends on a unique set of variables, no two systems are identical. Yours will be determined by

  • the architecture of your building.
  • the types of equipment it will support.
  • the configuration of any previously installed systems.
  • the particular cabling and connectors to be used.
  • what function the cabling system will carry out.
  • manufacturer's warranties.
  • your specific requirements.

Find the Right Telecommunications Partner

It is important to find a telecommunications partner who will work with you to design a system to meet your unique needs and specification. The telecommunications partner you hire should have extensive experience in data center and wireless implementations; closet, rack, and computer room design; HDMI, VGA audio, and flat screen installations; fiber optic splicing and testing, or category 5e and category 6 cable; as well as phone system installation and maintenance.

Don’t settle for a vendor that only does voice and data cabling. Many times these are small outfits that rely on temporary employees with little or no telecommunications experience. Errors made during the installation of your structured cabling can cause unnecessary expenses in trouble-shooting during the installation of your network and telephone equipment or failures sometime down the line.
